Young Republicans Call on Party Leaders to Address Climate Change
Krisana Finlay, Policy Director for the Utah Young Republicans and Nick Compton, Chair of the Utah Valley University College appeared on Inside Utah Politics this week to discuss climate policy.
“Young conservatives are passionate about climate change, but they also hold conservative values and want to see those values represented,” said Finlay.
“We have been taught to be stewards of the earth and that’s what we want to do,” said Compton.
At the same time, as Compton outlined, big-government policies are the wrong approach for America. “As we see coming from the left, there are radical proposals like the Green New Deal, which would be a disaster for the economy.”
Instead, both made the case for the Baker-Shultz Carbon Dividends plan, a market-based strategy that would accelerate clean energy innovation and leverage the power of American leadership.
“This [plan] would hold countries like India and China—who are some of the biggest polluters in the world—accountable for their actions,” explained Compton.
“I think the Baker-Shultz plan is a great solution. It would forward the free market and push innovation, while also holding other global players accountable for their actions,” Finlay said. “That’s what’s so exciting about this policy solution—it takes a conservative approach to climate.”
