Celebrating the 100th Birthday of George P. Shultz

Today marks the 100th birthday of the legendary George P. Shultz, one of the greatest statesmen and leaders in US history.

Shultz is one of only two Americans to have served in four different US cabinet posts. This includes his service as Secretary of State to President Reagan and pivotal role in helping to end the Cold War. Shultz is also a PhD economist, businessman, and US Marine.

Shultz is also one of the original co-authors and a namesake of the Baker-Shultz Carbon Dividends Plan. His clear-eyed leadership on free-market climate solutions is a continued inspiration to us all.

On account of his centennial celebration, the Hoover Institution hosted a special tribute to his remarkable carer. The event featured an amazing line-up of speakers, including George W. Bush, Jim Mattis, Hank Paulson, James A. Baker III, Condoleezza Rice, Senator Rob Portman, and many more.

Below are quotes, lightly edited, from the event and photo highlights from Shultz’s exceptional career.

Historians have called the 20th century, America’s century. I call the last 100 years the Shultz century. And what a difference you’ve made, my friend. A century of service and accomplishment, from your time in uniform as a proud marine in the Pacific during World War II, from your service as a cabinet member and advisor to four different Presidents, to your business success and your academic contributions, and your ongoing work at Hoover as you advocate for a better future for everyone of us. In the history of our Republic, only two men have held four cabinet level positions in one lifetime. One of these patriots who served so broadly is Secretary George Shultz, US Marine. The Marine Corps is forever proud, Mr. Secretary, to count you in its front ranks. More important than the posts you held are the accomplishments in those posts, so extensive that your life story now fills books describing your Herculean efforts. The specific issues you moved forward in those posts are a reminder of what an honest, devoted, and competent leader can do to make this world a better place.
— General Jim Mattis
Happy birthday George. You are a great friend and true American patriot.
— James A. Baker III
